Part of Palau's long-running series of small-format gold issues aimed squarely at the Asian collector market, this piece capitalizes on the maneki-neko's deep commercial roots in Edo-period Japan, where the beckoning cat figure became associated with the Gotokuji temple in Tokyo following folklore linking it to a feudal lord's lucky rescue from a lightning strike. Palau has no meaningful numismatic tradition of its own, issuing coins almost entirely through foreign licensing arrangements — the Republic functions here as a legal issuing authority, nothing more.
