Reverse description The reverse of this rectangular silver coin depicts a color reproduction of the iconic Byzantine-style icon of the Black Madonna of Czestochowa (Our Lady of Czestochowa), rendered in vivid polychrome enamel or color printing. The Virgin Mary is shown in a frontal, hieratic pose with the Christ Child, both figures adorned with richly decorated vestments featuring golden and green tones characteristic of the venerated Jasna Gora original. This issue constitutes the fourth coin in a 24-piece series dedicated to famous Madonnas of the world.

Additional information

The Madonna of Częstochowa, housed at Jasna Góra Monastery in southern Poland, became a focal point of national resistance during the Swedish invasion of the 1650s — the successful defense of the monastery in 1655 is credited with turning Polish Catholic sentiment against the occupiers and reversing the course of the war. Niue's 24-coin series draws on that loaded devotional history, packaging it as a numismatic franchise through the New Zealand Mint.

Niue has no geographic or cultural connection to the subject matter; the sovereign status is purely a licensing arrangement.
