Obverse description Conjoined busts of George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette in right-facing profile occupy the central field, with Washington depicted in the foreground in period dress with a queue hairstyle, and Lafayette slightly behind and to the right. The arrangement is a rare instance of a living foreign dignitary (Lafayette's likeness based on portraits) paired with a founding father on a United States coin. The circumferential legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs across the upper field, while LAFAYETTE DOLLAR curves along the lower periphery, each flanked by a five-pointed star. A beaded border frames the entire design.
