Obverse description Right-facing unadorned bust of King Kalākaua I, rendered in high relief with finely detailed curly hair and full beard, engraved in the naturalistic style of Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. The circumferential legend reads KALAKAUA I KING OF HAWAII, separated at the base by two small circular stops flanking the date 1883 in the lower exergual area. The field is smooth and open, with a toothed border encircling the entire design.
