Palau has issued commemorative dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1990s, contracting European mints to produce themed collector pieces with no connection to circulating currency. This Radetzky issue is part of that program. Field Marshal Radetzky died in 1858 at age 91, having served the Habsburg military for over seven decades — the Johann Strauss Sr. march written in his honor during the Italian campaigns of 1848 remains the encore piece at the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concert to this day.
