| Obverse description | Central device depicts a palm tree, a dromedary camel, and a traditional dhow sailing upon stylized waves, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A three-part legend in Tigrinya (Ge'ez script), English, and Arabic appears in the outer border, reading 'ERITREA' in each respective language, separated by five-pointed star ornaments. The date '1993' and the Pobjoy Mint mark 'PM' appear at the base of the design within the legend band. The entire composition is framed by a toothed (dentilated) rim. |

| Additional information |
Eritrea declared independence from Ethiopia in May 1993 following a UN-supervised referendum in which over 99% voted for separation — the culmination of a 30-year armed struggle. The Bank of Eritrea issued this dollar coinage almost immediately, one of the first sovereign monetary acts of one of Africa's newest nations. The nakfa would follow as the permanent currency in 1997, making this dollar series short-lived by design.
