Obverse description Central device depicts a palm tree, a dromedary camel, and a traditional dhow sailing upon stylized waves, all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. A three-part legend in Tigrinya (Ge'ez script), English, and Arabic appears in the outer border, reading 'ERITREA' in each respective language, separated by five-pointed star ornaments. The date '1993' and the Pobjoy Mint mark 'PM' appear at the base of the design within the legend band. The entire composition is framed by a toothed (dentilated) rim.

Reverse description Central device features a stylized plant or seedling enclosed within a laurel wreath, the whole surrounded by a beaded inner circle. The outer border carries a three-part legend in Tigrinya (Ge'ez script), English, and Arabic, reading 'INDEPENDENCE DAY' in each respective language, separated by bullet ornaments. The denomination '$ 1' and the commemorative date '24th MAY 1993' are also inscribed within the legend band. The design is framed by a toothed (dentilated) rim.
