The tiger snake dollar is part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing Dangerous Australians series, which has systematically worked through the continent's more lethal fauna since the program's inception. Notechis scutatus carries one of the highest venom yields of any snake species on earth, a fact that made it a subject of serious antivenom research in the mid-twentieth century — work largely pioneered at the Commonwealth Serum Laboratories in Melbourne.
The sixth portrait of Elizabeth II, by sculptor Jody Clark, was adopted by the RAM in 2019.
