The Sydney Opera House opened in October 1973 after a construction saga that consumed sixteen years, blew past its original budget by a factor of roughly fifteen, and drove its architect — Jørn Utzon — to resign in 1966, never returning to see the finished building. The Royal Australian Mint has issued commemoratives marking the structure before, but the 2023 anniversary falls in an awkward institutional moment: Elizabeth II died in September 2022, making this among the final Australian coins to carry her effigy under a new portrait designation before the transition to Charles III coinage.
