| Obverse description | Central field displays the coat of arms of the Republic of Palau, depicting a shield bearing a traditional figure holding a spear and paddle, accompanied by a crescent moon and star, framed by a laurel wreath. Eight small stars flank the shield in the field. The legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs along the upper periphery in Latin lettering, with the series name RAINBOW'S END inscribed on a scroll at the base of the shield. The denomination 1 $ appears in the lower field below the coat of arms. |

Palau's micro-gold program, launched in the mid-2000s, was among the first to exploit collector demand for legal-tender gold coins at sub-gram weights — a format made commercially viable only by modern blanking technology capable of producing consistent 11mm planchets at scale. The Hagia Sophia issue appeared the same year UNESCO was actively pressuring Turkey over structural conservation concerns at the site.
