The centre bears large bold lettering 'THE United States / Will pay the bearer / ONE DOLLAR', with the place and date of issue 'at the Treasury in New York / August 1st 1862' below. A red Treasury seal appears at lower centre-left, flanked by intricate guilloche underprint work in green and black, with two authorising signatures at right.
