Reverse description A finely detailed effigy of Guanyin, the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy, is depicted in three-quarter view, draped in flowing robes with a serene, idealized countenance and an ornate headdress. She is shown emerging from stylized clouds rendered in low relief around the lower and lateral fields. To the upper left, a four-character Chinese inscription reads 慈航普渡, meaning 'compassionate passage to salvation.' The denomination $1 appears in the lower left field in Latin numerals. The composition is executed in a classical East Asian artistic style against a polished field.
