Obverse description A neoclassical seated figure of Liberty occupies the central field, depicted in left profile resting upon a rocky platform. She is draped in classical robes and holds a pole surmounted by a Liberty cap in her raised right hand, while her left hand rests upon a heraldic shield inscribed LIBERTY. The engraver's signature C. GOBRECHT F. appears incuse along the base, with the date 1836 prominently placed in the lower exergue. The entire design is enclosed by a fine border of evenly spaced beads, reflecting the neoclassical artistic influence of Thomas Sully's original painting adapted for coinage by Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht.
