Obverse description Uncrowned, bare-headed effigy of King George VI facing left, modelled by Thomas Humphrey Paget, whose initials 'HP' appear below the truncation of the neck. The portrait is rendered in high relief with fine detail in the hair and facial features. The circumferential legend reads GEORGIVS VI D:G: REX ET IND:IMP:, separated by raised dots, running from the lower left around the upper field to the lower right. The effigy is set within a plain field bordered by a toothed (dentillated) rim.

Reverse description The central design, engraved by Emanuel Otto Hahn, depicts a voyageur and an Indigenous traveller paddling a birchbark canoe to the left across turbulent waters, with bundles of goods stowed in the vessel, one of which bears the initials 'H.B.' for the Hudson's Bay Company. A forested shoreline and setting sun appear in the background. The legend CANADA arcs across the upper field, the denomination DOLLAR appears along the lower field, and the date is positioned between them at left and right of the central device. The engraver's initials 'EH' are found in the field to the lower right. Note: the 1946 issue exists in both Short Water Lines (SWL) and Full Water Lines (FWL) varieties, distinguished by the number and length of water lines to the right of the canoe.
