Obverse description The obverse features three overlapping medallion-style devices in the central field: a frontiersman or cowboy figure at left, a depiction of Old Fort Hays at center, and a Native American chief in profile at right, all flanked by eight stars along the rim. The upper legend reads HAYS CITY, KANSAS / EST. APRIL 1867 / CENTENNIAL DOLLAR, while the lower legend along the border reads FORT HAYS COIN CLUB, with a redemption notice in the lower field stating the token was acceptable only at Centennial Headquarters until noon August 31, 1967.
