Obverse description The obverse features the national coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia at centre, depicting a sailing ship on the sea beneath a palm tree and a rising sun, with a dove in flight above, the whole shield supported by decorative scrollwork. A ribbon across the upper portion of the arms bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The outer legend reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA along the upper periphery, with the denomination 1 DOLLAR along the lower periphery. The date 1997 is divided across the field to either side of the arms, and the Pobjoy Mint privy mark PM appears in the field.
