Additional information

Liberia's early 2000s "European Currency" series was a nakedly commercial operation — these pieces were produced not for circulation but for the souvenir and novelty market, capitalizing on euro introduction fever as twelve nations simultaneously retired their national currencies in 2002. Finland's markka, which had been legal tender since 1860, vanished from circulation that same year.
