Tuvalu has been one of the more prolific issuers of novelty legal tender since the 1970s, when its separation from the Gilbert Islands colony prompted a rush of commemorative coinage aimed squarely at the collector market rather than circulation. The "Rotating Charm" mechanism — a freely spinning disc inset into the planchet — requires a modified collar and secondary assembly step during striking, making per-unit production costs substantially higher than a standard round.
The yin-yang motif has no cultural connection to Tuvalu whatsoever.
