Part of the Perth Mint's long-running Australian Treasures of Nature program, this issue belongs to a period when the mint was aggressively expanding its collector-focused base-metal dollar series to compete with its own silver bullion output. The yellow-billed kingfisher, endemic to the rainforests of Cape York Peninsula and New Guinea, is among the least-observed of Australia's kingfisher species — rarely encountered even by dedicated birders due to its preference for dense lowland jungle.
