Niue's Chinese lunar series occupies an odd corner of the commemorative market — the island territory issues coins under New Zealand monetary authority but contracts production almost entirely for collector export, primarily into Asian markets where zodiac-cycle pieces see genuine demand. The Year of the Rat opens the second full zodiac cycle in many such series, 2008 being the first Rat year since 1996.
The Beijing Olympics falling in this same Rat year drove unusual commercial interest in 2008-dated Chinese-themed issues across multiple mints globally.
