Additional information

William Dampier was the first person known to have visited Australia twice — and the first Englishman to explore parts of what is now Western Australia — yet spent time in prison between his two Pacific voyages after being court-martialled for cruelty to a subordinate officer. His 1697 account, A New Voyage Round the World, became a bestseller and directly prompted the Admiralty to fund his 1699 expedition to New Holland. Dampier also influenced both Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe, who drew on his published observations for Gulliver's Travels and Robinson Crusoe respectively.

Tuvalu's authority to issue commemorative coinage under the Australian dollar system dates to its 1978 independence.
