Willem Janszoon's 1606 voyage aboard the Duyfken — "Little Dove" in Dutch — produced the first documented European contact with the Australian mainland, predating Cook's 1770 landing by over 160 years. Janszoon charted roughly 320 kilometers of Cape York's western coastline, though he believed it a southern extension of New Guinea rather than a separate continent entirely.
