Victory in the Pacific Day — marked on August 15 in Australia — commemorates Japan's surrender in 1945, which ended a war that had brought fighting closer to Australian soil than any conflict before or since. Darwin had been bombed, Sydney Harbour shelled, and conscription extended to the Pacific theater under heavy political strain. The Perth Mint has issued Victory Day pieces intermittently, trading on Western Australia's particular relationship with the war given Fremantle's role as the primary Allied submarine base in the southern Pacific.
