| Additional information |
Vasco da Gama's 1497–99 voyage around the Cape of Good Hope to India broke the Venetian and Ottoman stranglehold on overland spice routes and redirected the entire commercial gravity of Europe toward the Atlantic powers. Portugal's subsequent control of the Indian Ocean trade made it briefly the wealthiest nation in Europe. The Cook Islands has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1970s, with the actual striking typically contracted to overseas mints rather than produced domestically.
