Obverse description A tribute obverse depicting four superimposed portrait effigies of Queen Elizabeth II in left-facing profile, representing the successive royal portrait designs used on Canadian coinage throughout her reign. The foremost and most prominent effigy is the mature portrait by Susanna Blunt, showing the Queen bare-headed with a pearl necklace and earring; behind it appear three progressively younger effigies, each crowned, receding into the mirror-polished field. The portraits are rendered in selective gold plating against a proof silver field. The arc legend along the lower rim reads ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA, flanked by the jubilee dates 1952 and 2022 separated by a stylized floral privy mark.

Additional information

Issued as part of the RCM's ongoing tribute series acknowledging the long reign of Elizabeth II, this piece was struck in 2022 — the year of her death in September, making it among the final Canadian coinage produced during her lifetime. The selective gold plating technique, applied over .9999 fine silver, requires a masking process during production that the RCM has refined considerably since its introduction to their collector program in the early 2000s.
