| Additional information |
The British Virgin Islands has issued commemorative dollars under royal prerogative since the 1970s, exploiting a licensing arrangement that allows the territory to produce collectible coinage largely for the numismatic market rather than circulation. This particular piece marks the centennial of the Peace Dollar's introduction in 1921, when U.S. Mint Director Raymond Baker faced intense congressional and public pressure to retire the Morgan design — which had itself survived well past its originally intended run. The transition was contentious; George T. Morgan was still employed by the Mint when Anthony de Francisci's design displaced his life's signature work.
