Additional information

Tuvalu has no meaningful historical connection to the Tiananmen Square massacre of June 1989, and this coin exists entirely as a product of the modern commemorative market — a sovereign mint licensing its name to a bullion-adjacent issue aimed at collectors rather than circulation. The Perth Mint, which strikes the overwhelming majority of Tuvaluan collector coinage under licensing agreements, produced pieces of this type in strictly limited runs with certificates of authenticity driving secondary market premiums far beyond melt value.

The massacre itself left a death toll the Chinese government has never officially disclosed; estimates from declassified British diplomatic cables run to approximately 10,000.
