This piece is one of several Fijian legal-tender silver issues produced under licensing arrangements common in the early 2010s, where the Reserve Bank of Fiji served largely as a nominal issuing authority while the actual commercial and design work was handled by European private mints — a practice that drew occasional criticism from collectors who felt it diluted the meaning of sovereign coinage. The underlying story, Hans Christian Andersen's 1838 tale, was written in a single afternoon according to Andersen's own diary entries.
