Reverse description A uniformed Australian infantryman is depicted in the foreground, kneeling with a rifle at the ready, evoking the determined spirit of the defenders of Tobruk during World War II. Behind him, a tank is rendered in relief, referencing the armoured engagements of the North African campaign. The inscription THE RATS OF TOBRUK appears prominently within the design, honouring the Allied garrison troops who earned that legendary designation during the 1941 siege. The composition is rendered in a detailed, medallic style with fine relief against a lightly textured field.

Additional information

The "Rats of Tobruk" were Australian, British, and Commonwealth troops who held the Libyan port against Rommel's Afrika Korps for 241 days in 1941 — the nickname thrown as an insult by German radio propagandist William Joyce ("Lord Haw-Haw") and immediately adopted as a badge of pride. Niue issues commemorative dollars of this format under licensing arrangements that allow it to produce coins for the collector market well beyond its own national history.

Silver-plated copper-nickel at this weight will show plating wear at the high points with even light handling.
