Additional information

The Battle for Caen, fought through July and August 1944, was one of the most brutally prolonged engagements of the Normandy campaign — the city was supposed to fall on D-Day itself but held out for nearly two months under German Army Group B. When Allied bombing finally cracked the defensive line, it reduced much of the medieval city to rubble, killing hundreds of Norman civilians in the process.

Cook Islands has issued commemoratives under licensing arrangements that have little connection to the subject matter beyond the contract. This piece is gold-plated copper from that same program.
