Tetsujin 28-go — known in Western markets as Gigantor — debuted in Mitsuteru Yokoyama's 1956 manga and became one of the first giant robot properties to reach American television, airing in the US from 1964. Tuvalu's practice of licensing pop-culture intellectual property for commemorative coinage was, by 2006, already well-established as the island nation's primary numismatic revenue stream, given a domestic population too small to sustain meaningful collector demand internally.
The coin was struck by the Perth Mint under its long-running arrangement with Pacific island territories.
