Niue has operated a licensing-based commemorative coin program since the 1990s, issuing legal tender under its currency agreement with New Zealand while generating revenue almost entirely from collector sales rather than circulation. This piece was produced under a licensing arrangement with Lucasfilm, which maintained unusually tight controls over approved merchandise in the years immediately preceding Disney's 2012 acquisition of the franchise.
