Issued to mark the centennial of the Stanley Cup, which Lord Stanley of Preston donated in 1892 as a challenge trophy for the top Canadian amateur hockey club. The Cup had long since ceased to be amateur by 1993, but the NHL leaned hard into the anniversary regardless. Two finish variants were struck — a standard proof and a matte proof — accounting for the dual Charlton references, both circulating in the collector market with roughly comparable mintages.
