Tuvalu's legal tender coinage has served as a vehicle for Australian-market collector issues since the 1970s, when the Perth Mint leveraged the newly independent nation's minting agreements to produce bullion and commemorative pieces outside Australia's own numismatic program. This dollar is one such product — Perth-struck, commercially motivated, and aimed squarely at the bullion collector rather than anything circulating in Funafuti.
The St. George reverse on this series traces directly to Benedetto Pistrucci's 1817 design, still in use on British sovereigns after more than two centuries without fundamental alteration.
