| Additional information |
Sigismund II Augustus married Barbara Radziwiłł in secret around 1547, defying the Polish nobility and his own mother, Queen Bona Sforza, who reportedly never forgave the union. The Sejm refused to recognize Barbara as queen; Sigismund forced the issue through sheer political pressure and had her crowned in 1550. She died the following year, and the grief-stricken king reportedly consulted a conjurer to summon her ghost — a story that embedded itself permanently in Polish Romantic literature.
The Mint of Poland has produced numerous collector issues for Niue, leveraging the island's licensing arrangements to reach European numismatic markets. This piece belongs to a broader Polish historical figures program with no circulation purpose whatsoever.
