Niue has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing agreements since the 1970s, using its New Zealand-backed currency status to produce coins with no meaningful domestic circulation. This piece is one of dozens from a romantic-themed series that flooded the collector market around 2010, produced almost certainly by the New Zealand Mint on contract. The zircon insert was a gimmick widely adopted by secondary market mints during this period to justify premium pricing on bullion-weight silver.
