Cook Islands has issued commemorative silver dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1970s, with the program expanding dramatically in the early 2000s to include an enormous range of themed issues produced largely for the collector market rather than domestic circulation. The "Running" designation in this series refers to a wildlife or athletic subject cataloged under KM#1153, a type that saw limited secondary market activity in the years following issue.
Virtually none of these pieces entered circulation on the islands themselves.
