Issued to mark the centennial of the Royal Canadian Navy, founded by the Naval Service Act of May 4, 1910. The RCM produced this as part of a broader series of military commemoratives that saw significant uptake from collector markets in both Canada and the United Kingdom — the shared naval heritage making it unusually popular on both sides of the Atlantic.
The selective gold plating was applied post-striking, a technique the RCM had refined through the 1990s and 2000s across numerous collector issues.
