Niue has issued commemorative dollars under licensing arrangements since the 1990s, using its New Zealand-backed currency status to mint coins with virtually no connection to the island's 1,600-odd residents. This Shakespeare piece is one of dozens of themed issues struck for the collector market through the New Zealand Mint, which has handled Niue's commemorative program for years.
The Romeo and Juliet design belongs to a broader series of Shakespeare play coins released around 2010. Intended entirely for the numismatic trade, none circulated in Niue.
