Obverse description Right-facing crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II after the portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley, depicted wearing the George IV State Diadem with curled hair and a drop earring. The legend ELIZABETH II arcs along the left rim and COOK ISLANDS along the right rim, with the denomination 1 DOLLAR at the top of the field and the date 2017 at the bottom. The engraver's initials IRB appear beneath the portrait truncation. The field is rendered in a deeply toned black finish contrasting with the gold-plated portrait and lettering.

Additional information

Struck as part of Cook Islands' extensive commemorative program, which has long leveraged the country's currency-issuing rights to produce collector pieces with no connection to local circulation. Diana's 1997 landmine advocacy in Angola — her visit to Huambo just months before her death — gives this issue its nominal historical hook, though the coin itself was produced two decades after the event and twenty years after her death.
