Bolesław I Chrobry — "the Brave" — extracted a remarkable concession at the Congress of Gniezno in 1000 AD, when Holy Roman Emperor Otto III personally placed his own diadem on Bolesław's head, a gesture interpreted across Poland as imperial endorsement of royal ambition. Formal coronation as king came only in 1025, weeks before his death. Niue has long licensed its sovereignty for commemorative programs with no domestic circulation expectation; these coins are struck entirely for the collector market under agreements with overseas minting operations.
