Obverse description The obverse features a raised central disc bearing an eight-pointed compass star in relief, set within a concave field framed by two concentric beaded borders. A small effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in right-facing profile appears at the top of the coin between the two legend arcs. The upper legend reads ELIZABETH II to the left and COOK ISLANDS to the right, while the denomination ONE DOLLAR is inscribed along the lower arc. The overall design has a domed, medallic quality with the central motif projecting prominently from the polished gold-plated field.

Cook Islands issued a long-running zodiac dollar series in the early 2000s, contracting production to foreign mints targeting the collector and novelty gift market rather than circulation. These were never intended as spending money — the gold plating alone made hoarding economically rational, even if the underlying metal did not.
