Issued as part of Australia's long-running commemorative dollar program, this piece marks the 75th anniversary of the December 7, 1941 attack that killed 2,403 Americans and drew the United States into the Pacific War. Australia's particular stake in that anniversary is often underplayed — within months of Pearl Harbor, Darwin suffered a Japanese air raid larger in aircraft numbers than the Pearl Harbor strike itself, and the threat of mainland invasion became suddenly credible.
