The British Virgin Islands has no particular zoological or political connection to the orangutan — this is a frankly commercial issue, one of dozens of wildlife-themed dollars produced for the collector market under BVI licensing arrangements in the 2010s. The territory's name on the obverse lends legal tender status to a coin that was never intended to circulate and was manufactured specifically for the souvenir and novelty trade.
