Pobjoy Mint, operating as a private contractor out of Surrey, has struck coins for dozens of smaller territories and dependent states since the 1960s — the Olympic equestrian series being among several thematic programs produced for client issuers rather than driven by any domestic monetary need. These pieces circulate in name only; the print runs are collector-directed from the outset.
Equestrian events returned to the Olympic program at the 1952 Helsinki Games after a wartime absence, opening competition beyond military officers for the first time.
