Niue has operated a prolific licensed coinage program since the 1990s, issuing collector pieces under agreements with major intellectual property holders including Lucasfilm. This 2011 piece was produced during the peak of that program's expansion, when dozens of pop-culture themed issues were being struck annually for the numismatic gift market rather than any circulating purpose.
Gold-plated copper-nickel at this weight was the workhorse format for that entire run — cheap enough to produce in volume, presentable enough to retail at a significant premium over melt.
