Additional information

The National War Memorial in Ottawa was originally unveiled in 1939 by King George VI to commemorate Canadians killed in the First World War, then rededicated in 1982 to include the Second World War and Korea. It became the site of a national trauma in October 2014 when Corporal Nathan Cirillo was shot and killed while standing ceremonial guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier — an attack that also breached the Centre Block of Parliament minutes later. This issue appeared four years after that event, during a period of heightened public attachment to the memorial.
