| Additional information |
Matthew Flinders completed his circumnavigation of Australia aboard HMS Investigator between 1801 and 1803, the first confirmed circuit of the continent — and the voyage on which he argued, successfully over time, for adopting the name "Australia" over "New Holland." He never saw that name officially adopted; he died in 1814, the day after his account of the voyage was finally published.
