Additional information

The "Lucky Loonie" tradition began at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics when ice technician Trent Evans secretly buried a loonie beneath centre ice at the E Center — Canada swept both the men's and women's gold medals in hockey, and the coin became folklore overnight. The RCM has issued commemorative silver versions tied to subsequent Games ever since. The 2010 issue marks the Vancouver Olympics, where Canadian athletes delivered 14 gold medals, the most by any nation at a single Winter Games.
