Obverse description The obverse bears the fourth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, depicting the Queen in right-facing profile as a mature sovereign at approximately 77 years of age. The bust is uncrowned and unadorned save for a necklace and earrings, rendered in a restrained, naturalistic style. The legend around the upper field reads ELIZABETH II D•G•REGINA, with the designer's initials SB and the date 2004 appearing below the portrait. The Latin legend translates as 'Elizabeth II, Queen by the Grace of God.'

Additional information

The 2004 loonie is notable primarily for what changed that year rather than what was produced: the Royal Canadian Mint quietly altered the plating process on the aureate-bronze finish to improve adhesion and reduce delamination complaints that had accumulated through the late 1990s production runs. Most collectors cannot distinguish the pre- and post-change pieces without laboratory analysis, but the KM#507 designation tracks the revised specification.
