Tuvalu's coin program has long functioned as a revenue mechanism for a nation with virtually no domestic economy — the islands generate more income from their ".tv" internet domain licensing than from most traditional exports. By 2005, the government was issuing themed collector pieces almost entirely for foreign buyers, with military aviation a reliable seller in that market. This piece appeared the same year the F/A-22 achieved initial operational capability with the 1st Fighter Wing at Langley.
